The Monastery of St. Gabriel (founded 397) is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world. It is located on the Tur Abdin plateau near Midyat in the Mardin Province in Southeastern Turkey, the motherland of the Syriac people.
The ancient monastery has been involved in a land dispute with the Turkish government and Kurdish village leaders. Attempts to confiscate land owned by the monastery have garnered attention from many European governments gathering opposition to Turkey's EU bid.
Beside the Syriac community suffers from a discrimination of their ancient language. The two programs feature the conflict around St. Gabriel monastery, the dispute with the Kurdish villagers and the life of the Syriac Community in Southeastern Turkey.
