Transvestites in Turkey

In Turkey, where family honour is dependent on female chastity, transvestites are particularly despised. Shunned by both the gay and straight community they face widespread discrimination.

“Transvestites’ lifestyle doesn’t fit into our culture and moral values”, explains one man. Viewed as sex objects by society and hounded from normal jobs, many transvestites turn to prostitution. Ironically, most of their clients are homosexuals, in denial about their sexuality. This has attracted the wrath of Istanbul’s vocal gay community, who believe these closet gays give them a bad reputation.
