Sabine Küper-Büsch

Born in Werne, Germany

MA in Political Science/ Sociology and German Literature, University of Hamburg. Specialisation on Turkey and the Middle East.

The director, curator and author chose Istanbul as a residence in 1992. As a correspondent for several German media institutions she traveled to destinations like Tehran, Damascus, Cyprus, Erbil and Baghdad since 1997.

She covered the life reporting for the German news channel n-tv on central events: the Abdullah Öcalan trial in 1999, the Earth quakes in İzmit and Düzce 1999, the anniversary of the Iraq crisis in Baghdad 2001, the Presidential elections in Tehran 2001, the Al-Quaida bombings in Istanbul 2003 and several more.

Since 2002 Sabine Küper-Büsch is producing documentaries together with Thomas Büsch. Both got awarded on international Festivals.

Their short and long documentaries are mainly screened on primetime slots on the channels arte, 3Sat, ARD, ORF.

Sabine Küper-Büsch produced Radio programs about Cultural subjects and features about Istanbul’s urban scene for German Broadcasters DLF, NDR, WDR, Radio Bremen.

She was Correspondent for Swiss Neue Zürcher Zeitung am Sonntag in 2011 and 2012. She is regularly writing portraits and feature stories for the Plattform Ahval, the amnesty international journal and the Berlin based weekly jungle world.

Sabine Küper-Büsch has published three books and contributed to several other publications on various subjects in the fields of current politics, political analysis as well as historical and cultural topics in Turkey and its neghboring countries.

She is in the board of the Istanbul based cultural association “Diyalog derneği”. In this framework she is organizing cultural events and curates exhibitions.

Together with Thomas Büsch she is creating and curating the Multimedia Plattform InEnArt. Both invented the Mahalla Festival in 2017 as a Plattform for international cooperations of artists on glocal relevant topics like climate change, armed conflicts, xenophobia and others. Since 2022 the Festival is part of MagicCarpets, a network of 20 independent European Festivals.

Thomas Büsch

Born in Berlin, Germany

Studied Visual Communication, Science of Art and Philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts, Kassel, focus: film and video. Research studies in Juba, Southern Sudan and Arabic studies. MA in Visual Communication “The Esthetic of the Unsettled”.

He worked as project manager for international art exhibitions with Christos M. Joachimides – Zeitgeist Society Berlin -, Norman Rosenthal – Royal Academy London – and Jan Hoet – Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst Gent.

1996 he has been the founder and publisher of the online magazine clubmedia.

He has lived in Istanbul since 1998, during this period he was creative director for online presentations for Anadolu Grubu Turkey and other projects; he was also part time instructor at Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty for Communication.

Since 2001 he has been producing TV-programs and documentaries in partnership with Sabine Küper.

Awards: 1993/94 P.S.1 Residency New York City; 1997 Fellowship Stiftung Starke Berlin; 1998 Residency Istanbul Berlin Senat for Science, Research and Culture.

Founding Member and Secretary General of diyalog, promotion of cultural exchange with Turkey.
